What do you want to be when you grow up?
Holding a newborn baby in your arms is like magic. You look at her tiny body and are wrapped up in every moment. You can't even think about this baby as an adult. You struggle with every fibre of your being to keep this miniature human safe, healthy...alive.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
You child grows and learns to walk and talk. Expression comes from the most innate and primitive place. She reaches for the baby doll and cradles it in her arms...how does she know? She dances to the music and everyone marvels and laughs at her rhythm, or lack there of. As soon as she takes these first steps, she is both walking toward you and away from you...into the world.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
School begins and life moves on. The once totally dependent tiny creature is now learning from others. Influences are all around. The world is big and she is still so small...but growing and stretching. She reads books, can add numbers and knows the provinces. She reaches for a pen and paper and writes...constantly. Poems, songs, stories, books. The words pour from her and you wonder, is this the path she'll take?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
You think of all that the future holds for her. Your life has been filled with challenges and triumphs, gains and losses. Skepticism has held you back at times. Empathy has propelled you forward. You are a parent and that changed everything. You look at her and see pieces of you, only pieces because you can see that she is much more than you.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
She has the potential to be whatever she wants to be. To make her contribution...whatever that might be. To rule the world or simply to exist. You stand at her side and watch her become what she will be when she grows up.
