Well, it really was only a matter of time before I let a man on the kitchen counter. It was tough deciding who to chat with for this week's post. In honour of Father's Day, I would like to introduce you to my friend Scott. You will see that Scott is an active father who works in an...interesting industry. I'm curious to see if men see their kitchen any differently than women? I know it isn't the 1950's anymore...men actually go into the kitchen these days. Let's take a look inside Scott's family kitchen.
Tell me 3 things about yourself
I have the coolest and smartest boys in the world. They are 4 and 6, and surprise me daily with their creativity and humour. Their mom is pretty great too 🙂
My days are spent promoting eco-friendly composting toilets in any way possible - and this is actually more interesting than one might think. A good chunk of my time is spent working with our spokesperson and eco-guru, Ed Begley, Jr. at shows and media events. I do quite a few interviews too. Being interviewed about my kitchen is a definite first though!
I try to watch as many Blue Jays games as I can and have an entire household of baseball fans.
Are you for, or against, small appliances on the kitchen counter?
I am definitely in favour of appliances on the counter. The kitchen is a workspace, not a museum. I want my toaster and coffee maker up there ready to work! To me anyone who puts all that stuff under the counter obviously has way too much time on their hands!
Name 5 things that are on your counter right now
Just five? A coffee maker that gets less use than it should due to too many trips on the way to work to Tim Hortons or Starbucks. A toaster, of course. A "griddler" to make grilled cheeses, a favourite of my 4 and 6 year old boys. There is also an iPod dock and a pile of art and school work done by my kids. And, all of this will be staying put (except for maybe the kids stuff) and not being going under the counter.
Name 1 thing that you would change about your kitchen counter
I actually like our counters, they are black granite. But, I am not a fan of the huge amount of space located behind our sink and in front of windows. You can't even reach it completely making it almost unusable and hard to clean.
What is your favourite thing to do on your kitchen counter?
I was going to try and be clever with this one, but I can't. There is really nothing I truly enjoy doing on the kitchen counter unless you count making my kids' school lunches as enjoyable...
Bonus Questions
How has your kitchen changed since becoming a dad?
I was going to say it hasn't changed much, because we had our first child soon after moving into this house. However, it really has changed a lot with all the school work and almost endless supply of crumbs to clean up off the floor. But, with the messes has come an awesome amount of energy and life to the kitchen and the rest of the house!
What would be an ideal father's day gift/or way to spend the day?
Going to the Jays game with my boys and my wife would be the best gift. This year I am actually playing baseball on my men's senior league team. I also get to make pancakes on the Friday before, at my boys school.
Thanks Scott. I really love the line "a kitchen is a workplace, not a museum." I think we could all do to remember this, when we are feverishly, wiping every crumb and clearing every counter - can you still work in there? Curious to find out more about compostable toilets? Check out Scott's company website www.envirolet.ca, follow Envirolet on facebook or twitter. In the world of environmentally conscious products, having Ed Begley Jr. as your spokesperson is pretty incredible. Thanks for letting us into your kitchen.
Hope you all have a great Father's Day weekend.
