First, let's get down to the most popular question I get asked about tape resist art projects...what is the best tape to use for tape resist projects?
The best tape for canvas painting
This is a question I've received and I have an answer for you. While you may be tempted to use regular masking tape, don't do it. Masking tape is too sticky and will not peel off the canvas easily. Which is why I love using painter's tape for this art project. Painter's tape is low-tack and is specifically designed to peel off easily. In terms of the width, that is totally up to you. You can always tear the tape into lengths and widths that you want with your fingers or use scissors to create crisp lines.
Father's Day Tape Resist Canvas Art
canvas - 8" x 10" gesso-primed canvas
painter's tape - 1 inch (green is medium adhesion)
craft acrylic paints - blue, yellow, pink, green
paint brush
ribbon
cordless glue gun
Okay, let's have some fun! The first decision is what message will you (your child) write on the canvas. We went with the super simple and straightforward, "Love you Dad". If your kid has a special name for their Dad, be sure to include that. If you're a tween making this art maybe use some text message-style message, "UR the Best". Be creative and make it personal.
Use the tape to write your message on the canvas. If you like clean and straight lines, then use your scissors to cut the tape, or tear the tape with your fingers. To make the heart, I pressed 3 pieces of tape side-by-side and then used a pencil to draw a heart on the "sheet" of tape I had made. Then I cut out the heart and pressed it in place on the canvas. You could use this technique to create any little designs, just be sure to overlap and press the strips together tightly so when you paint, the void will be clear and clean. Once you have pressed all the letters and designs in place it's time to apply the paint.
For little painters, they could use their fingers to apply the paint. I used my fingers to make the flowers in our design. Yep, everyone loves a little fingerprint art project. A few dots of paint and you've got a cute flower. Add the paint in whatever design you like. As I said earlier, you can choose Dad's favorite colors or maybe colors that would coordinate with the room where he will hang it. Have fun!
Once the painting is done, it's time to take off the tape. I let the paint dry for a few hours before I peeled it off. Don't wait too long to peel the tape off, you want the paint to still be a little pliable as you peel the tape.
When the tape is peeled and the paint is dry it's time to add a strip of ribbon to hang the artwork from. Now, our canvas is small and light so a dollop of hot glue and ribbon will work fine. If your canvas is larger and heavier you will want to invest in a proper picture hanging kit.
Gift it to Dad and he can hang up your piece of art and enjoy for years to come. This also makes a great birthday gift, gift for Mom or grandparents. The possibilities are endless. Have fun. Be creative!
