Getting the Garden Growing

Well, the weather here in Toronto still isn't quite acting like its normal self. We should be experiencing hot days, as the start of summer is just around the corner. Instead the days and evenings can still be a little cool. Of course that hasn't stopped us. Over the last couple of weeks we have been getting our hands dirty planting our little vegetable garden. 

We have a fairly small city yard...only about 9 feet deep. The best thing about our yard is that it faces west. We have a very, very hot and sunny yard, no matter the weather. So, our vegetable garden is always successful. Last year we experimented with growing way too many tomatillos. So, when we were making our plan for what to plant, we decided to leave tomatillos off the list. Every year my girls and I chat about what we want to eat and therefore, what we want to grow.

My kids have jumped on the kale craze...so growing kale was a must. Our dill came back, despite our terrible winter...so pickling cucumbers have been planted. All our usual herbs made the list. We have already started harvesting chamomile. This year, instead of tomatillos, we are growing roma plum tomatoes...perfect for making homemade salsa. We also planted our usual sweet peas, in an attempt to make our sweet pea tee-pee. I love planting veggies in the garden with my daughters. There are few things that I find more satisfying then gardening. I really hope that when my girls grow up they will plan and plant their own vegetable gardens. A tomato from the backyard garden always tastes 100 times better than one from the store. Do you grow vegetables? What are you growing?
