Camping is the perfect time to sit back and enjoy the environment around you. No electricity means no television, no laundry and no lights. Nothing but campfires, a Coleman stove and good books. But how do we leave the campsite just as clean and green as when we arrived?
Reusable dishes
This is no time to pack the disposable dishes and cutlery. Grab your outdoor dishes, a large bowl to wash the dishes in and your biodegradable soap. If you hang a clothes line, or use one that your tarp is attached to, you can easily line dry your dishcloth and dish towels.
Proper disposal of waste
The campsite is not a place for littering, for may reasons. Dropping that food wrapper, or pouring your bacon grease in the woods might not seem like a big deal...tell that to the bears! Keep your campsite map handy and familiarize yourself with the trash drop off locations. Properly disposing of your waste keeps the site clean and safe for you and your neighbours.
Fight the bugs
My kids always come home from a camping trip covered with bites! This year we are going to try the brand Jason's "Quit Bugging Me" insect repellent. This in combination with some citronella candles...and proper clothing...will hopefully keep the bugs at bay. (We'll also be packing some kiddie Benadryl, just in case.)
Firewood
Most campsites will only allow you to burn the wood they supply. However, if this is not the case, use only fallen wood. Try and hold back your inner Paul Bunyan...put down the axe...don't chop down a perfectly healthy tree. Leave it for the next people, and the animals, to enjoy.
Teaching moment
When kids are along for a camping trip, every moment is a teaching moment. If you treat the environment with respect it will make a lasting impression on them. Even when you are out exploring in the forest it's important to respect the habitat of others.
