I met Harry over 10 years ago. I remember hearing about this "kids" book, that adults were enjoying. I guess I thought I might as well give it a try. I bought the first book "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and brought it with me on my daily commute. I remember riding the TTC streetcar and being so entranced by the adventures that the driver would have to ring the bell and holler that it was the "last stop!" Good thing I lived at the last stop.
I have always loved books where an author has completely invented an alternative world, even language. Not that I am a science fiction reader...I'm not. However, every once in a while I like to fall into these magical places. I just finished reading "The Hobbit" - yes, my first time!
When the movies started being released I got into the habit of reading the book that corresponded to the movie just before the movie came out. But, when it came to the last two books I couldn't stop myself from reading them one after the other. Not only that, but after reading "The Half-Blood Prince", I made my husband read his very first HP book - and he enjoyed it as well.
We went and saw the final movie last night. I won't say anything about it. I'll just say that it was great! I was sad to know this was the end of the adventures. At the end I reflected on the many hours that I have spent with these books - and I wonder if my daughter's will be taken with Harry? So far, my eldest isn't interested. But then again, I didn't read these books until I was in my 20's...she has plenty of time.

Great article Jen. We are all fond of Harry and the gang over here and often use J.K's language in day-to-day life: As in; "Mom, can you hold this?" ..."No! Look, my hands are already full. I am a mere Muggle, you know. Geez. Cut me some slack."
