Not everyone is an artist and the good news is...you don't have to be an artist to paint this canvas. That's the fun of creating tape resist art, the tape does some of the "artistic" work for you.
Tape Resist Canvas Art Project
12" x 12" canvas
acrylic paints in various colours
paintbrush
painters tape
pencil
permanent marker
Okay, pick out your canvas. We used a square canvas, but you could just as easily use any shape or size canvas for this art project. Make sure you buy a gesso primed canvas, so the paint will properly adhere to the canvas, without spreading and bleeding. If you have an unprimed canvas, you will want to take the time to gesso the canvas before starting.
Once the canvas is ready to go it's time to decide what to sketch onto the canvas. Simple shapes work best when working with tape resist art. We opted for a heart, but we also wanted to try making a peace sign. Even simply taping a pattern of random lines works nicely. Whatever you decide, lightly sketch the design onto the canvas.
Then, it's time to get taping. I prefer using smaller strips of tape. I think it looks nice when there is a little hole, where the paint can seep through. However, if you are looking for crisp lines use scissors. Either way, be sure to press the edges of the tape down firmly, sealing the edges in place.
Now, it's time to paint. Choose whatever colours you like. We opted for colours that work well in my daughter's room. Have fun painting all over the tape. This is the fun part. With tape resist art you can stroke the brush all over the place, with total abandon. A good tip is to start with the lightest colours first and then move on to the darker colours. However, you really can do whatever you want.
Let the paint dry and then peel off the tape - revealing your design. The next step is totally up to you. We liked the look of the black lines. We used a black permanent marker to add the lines. We didn't worry about the lines being perfect.
Again, this is a fun and creative project. You could outline the shape your tape revealed or skip the marker altogether.
Once the project is complete, it's time to pick the perfect place to hang your artwork. If you are using a light canvas simply use a push pin, pressed into the wall to hand your canvas. I like to use a level and press 2 push pins into the wall.
